In India, it was the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), where the desire for service was not limited to professional regard and honor alone. These elite services are power and prestige borne not only in social relations but in the sphere of marriage as well. Living with an IAS or an IPS officer is considered a path to a life of power, security, and credibility, and such marriages are much pursued. IAS-IPS matrimony has developed into a different category altogether as it is expected that officers of the two services would have similar professional profiles, share a common set of values, and also work in the same social strata.
